On a typical sheep gathering session, 10-12 farmers face difficulties finding all their animals. The implication is that both animal and farmer may have to stay out for longer than necessary. When there is heavy snow, this compounds the problems and the cold induces distress upon both farmer and animal.

Telia Norway and start-up Nortrace equipped 1,000 sheep with collars with tracking modules in order for the solution to be effective. Narrowband IoT technology was used to remotely track and monitor the animals.

The solution allows farmers to monitor the pinpoint position and well-being of their herd while they are grazing on the pastures.
Narrowband IoT technology has longer battery life and better coverage at a significantly lower prices which is ideal for operations of this nature.
