Reducing Mean Time to Repair by 50 Percent with SmartConnect
PTC
Varian has a variety of medical instruments and cancer treatment systems that support today’s leading-edge treatment modalities with Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT). These treatment systems are deployed at more than 1,000 hospitals and clinics worldwide. Traditionally, system and equipment problems have required one or more service technicians to diagnose and resolve issues at the hospital site, resulting in higher costs and lost patient treatment time. For a typical treatment device, the loss of one day’s treatment time can result in 35 patients missing their treatments, which is something hospitals and patients cannot afford. Problem resolution can be complicated if incorrect or incomplete information has been provided by the operator, and also in cases where the problem cannot be recreated once the technician is on site. Operators of the Varian Acuity™ imaging system, an integrated simulator and verification tool for testing patient treatment plans, occasionally require expert assistance. Image quality optimization, solving operational problems, and tuning system performance can cost time and money for Varian and their customers.

Mobile monitoring system: Vehicles with sensors to control air quality in Glasgow - Libelium Industrial IoT Case Study
Mobile monitoring system: Vehicles with sensors to control air quality in Glasgow
Countries throughout the world have a need, and in many cases a legal obligation, to ensure air quality is meeting specific standards. Policies aim to reduce exposure to air pollution, by reducing emissions and setting limits and targets for AQI. Public authorities in cities have deployed static stations to monitor air quality data for a set of pollutant with specific, and high cost, sensing technologies. These stations provide highly accurate data but their cost limits the quantity of deployments, leaving large gaps in coverage.

Ascend Performance Materials Case Study - AVEVA Industrial IoT Case Study
Ascend Performance Materials Case Study
Ascend operations must access multiple software systems to manage day-to-day operations in an effective and secure manner. These systems generate large sets of data which contain critical information pertaining to management systems, planning and cost information in business systems and energy consumption. As a result, Ascend management was challenged with creating relevant reports reflecting performance measures in overall context of their operational process. The company’s previous process entailed collecting and analyzing data manually which was not effective, since the information collected was generated after the fact, and was too complex for collaborative use across the organization.

Asset Tracking - Impinj Industrial IoT Case Study
Asset Tracking
Each day, PAK picked up soiled linen which had been hand counted by its customers. On the following day, they were expected to return the exact same amount of linens. However, manual counts conducted by PAK’s customers were always inaccurate (a problem inherent to soiled counting) and not being able to return exact amounts was very problematic. PAK sought an RFID-enabled textile-tracking system to enable total linen monitoring throughout the whole linen cycle, while increasing facility and operation efficiency, preventing loss and ensuring customers receive the correct textiles. PAK chose to work with USTEK RFID Solutions, a sister company that designs and manufactures integrated RFID terminals for industrial laundry markets worldwide. It was challenging to find RFID products that operated well in the PAK facility, as the environment was damp and full of metal trolleys. After testing many different readers, chips and antennas in the facility, USTEK and PAK chose to use Impinj products due to their superior performance.

Hardware Retailer Uses Data Warehouse to Track Inventory - Informatica Industrial IoT Case Study
Hardware Retailer Uses Data Warehouse to Track Inventory
Ace tracked which products retailers ordered, when they were ordered and shipped. However, the company could not track or forecast actual sales. Data used for reporting was up to a one-week old, owing to performance and data cleansing issues. Requirement to integrate wholesale and inventory data with POS data to help drive key business decisions, improve category management, lower inventory costs and optimize pricing. Reliance on custom coding to integrate POS data was excessively resource intensive and led to major performance constraints.

ArcelorMittal condition monitoring - Semiotic Labs Industrial IoT Case Study
ArcelorMittal condition monitoring
ArcelorMittal’s rotating assets often operate in harsh environments. A conveyor at the company’s hot strip mill in Ghent, Belgium moves plates of sizzling hot steel along the production process. In conditions like these, traditional proximity-based technologies like vibration and acoustic analysis fail: the sensors can’t handle the high temperatures.“In the steel industry, assets frequently operate in conditions that are not hospitable to sensitive sensor technologies,” says Andy Roegis, ArcelorMittal’s industrial digitalization manager for northern Europe. “The conveyor on our hot strip mill is a critical part of the production process, but it’s virtually impossible to use manual or vibration-based techniques to assess its condition.”

Artificial Intelligence and the implications on Medical Imaging - Siemens Industrial IoT Case Study
Artificial Intelligence and the implications on Medical Imaging
There are several factors simultaneously driving integration of AI in radiology. Firstly, in many countries around the world there is a discrepancy between the number of doctors trained in radiology and the rising demand for diagnostic imaging. This leads to greater demands for work efficiency and productivity. For example, the number of radiology specialists (consultant work- force) in England went up 5% between 2012 and 2015, while in the same period the number of CT and MR scans increased by 29 and 26 percentage points respectively. In Scotland, the gap widened even further (The Royal College of Radiologists 2016). Today, the average radiologist is interpreting an image every three to four seconds, eight hours a day (Choi et al. 2016).Secondly, the image resolution of today’s scanners is continuously improving – resulting in an ever greater volume of data. Indeed, the estimated overall medical data volume doubles every three years, making it harder and harder for radiologists to make good use of the available information without extra help from computerized digital processing. It is desirable, both in radiological research and in clinical diagnostics, to be able to quantitatively analyze this largely unexploited wealth of data and, for example, utilize new measurable imaging biomarkers to assess disease progression and prognosis (O’Connor et al. 2017). Experts see considerable future potential in the transformation of radiology from a discipline of qualitative interpretation to one of quantita- tive analysis, which derives clinically relevant information from extensive data sets (“radiomics”). “Images are more than pictures, they are data,” American radiologist Robert Gillies and his colleagues write (Gillies et al. 2016). Of course, this direction for radiology will require powerful, automated procedures, some of which at least will come under the field of artificial intelligence.

IIC Connected Vehicle Urban Traffic Management Testbed - Infosys Industrial IoT Case Study
IIC Connected Vehicle Urban Traffic Management Testbed
Road congestion and strained transportation networks are persistent concerns associated with the rapid urbanization of developing and developed economies. A 2015 study1 reported that travel delays due to traffic congestion led to the waste of 3.1 billion gallons of fuel and a loss of nearly 7 billion extra hours to travelers during rush hour traffic, with a nationwide cost of around $160 billion, or $960 per commuter. Alleviating traffic congestion, in addition to improving safety, is leading public and private organizations to explore new mobility paradigms such as ride-share autonomous vehicles. GOAL The goal of the Connected Vehicle Urban Traffic Management (CVUTM) testbed is to create a smart road traffic ecosystem featuring connected vehicles using vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) technologies, sensor fusion, industrial IoT platforms, cloud infrastructure, and edge analytics. This testbed will serve to preempt road congestion, automatically detect unusual eventson the road, and enable cooperative movement of traffic. In due course, both autonomous and non-autonomous vehicles will participate in this ecosystem with a goal of minimizing road congestion and improve overall improving motorist and pedestrian safety.
